Blinds & Shutter Types & Uses

Faux wood window blinds combine the best of both worlds. On one hand, these have the attractive qualities of real wood sans the purchase costs of the real thing. On the other hand, these window blinds have the durability, functionality and ease of maintenance that comes from manmade materials, not to mention that it is more weather-resistant than real wood, too. These window blinds are ideal for interior spaces with comparatively high humidity, harsh sunlight and high traffic like the kitchen and living room where frequent cleaning of the fixtures is required. These window treatments also come in a wide variety of sizes, stains and painted colors, thus, making for easy blending into any existing décor.

 Roman Blinds

Roman blinds are made from various kinds of fabrics, which are designed to fold into even pleats when these window blinds are raised to let the air and sunlight in. These window treatments are ideal for unusually shaped or sized windows because of their easy customization possibilities. These window blinds are made by combining a solid fabric panel and then mounting it on slats, which are connected to cords. When you pull on the cords, the flat fabric then folds into attractive pleats although there are also hobbled Roman window blinds where the fabrics overlap each other to form soft pleats when these are fully lowered.

Window Shades

Yet another type of window blinds is the pleated window shades. These come in a wide variety of operations including the traditional pull cord as well as spring loaded bottom rails, continuous cord loops, and top down/bottom up. Of course, these window blinds also come in a wide variety of sizes, styles and colors many of which are in semi-sheer and semi-opaque materials. This way, outdoor light can still come into the room while still filtering out the harsh sunlight.

 Bali Blinds

Bali blinds are actually another form of pleated window shades. These window blinds add texture to the room, thus, enhancing its ambience while also ensuring that privacy is maintained. Most Bali blinds have mechanisms to prevent sagging, fading and uneven spacing of the pleats, thus, making these window blinds suitable for areas that require symmetry in the décor.

 Plantation Shutters

Plantation shutters are shutter shades that are usually made from broad wooden slats mounted on a solid frame. These window treatments are best used in relatively warmer areas where direct sunlight passes through to the room. Unlike window blinds, these can be opened and closed on their hinges in a manner similar to traditional windows. You can either open plantation shutter shades all the way for air ventilation or close these shut to keep out the natural elements especially during inclement weather.

 Bi-fold Shutters & Shades

Another type of shutter shades are the so-called bi-fold shutters. Basically, these window treatments consist of four panels – two panels are hinged together with the last panel nearest to the side of the window attached with a hanging hinge, one on the left side and one on the right side. The effect is four panels that can be folded partially or completely open or shut depending on the circumstances.
